چکیده

We present near-IR narrow-band continuum-subtracted images in the H2 2:122 m, and Br 2:166 m emission lines for a sample of 15 bipolar planetary nebulae. H2 emission was definitely detected for most of the objects in this sample (13 out of 15). The very high H2 detection rate supports the idea that bipolar planetary nebulae have important reservoirs of molecular material and offer suitable physical conditions for the excitation of H2. The strength of the H2 emission and the H2/Br flux ratio are found to correlate with the morphology of the bipolar nebulae observed. Bipolar PNe with broad and bright rings exhibit stronger H2 emission than bipolar PNe with narrow twists. High-quality (sub-arcsec) [N II] and H optical images have been used to compare the distribution of the ionized and molecular material. The H2 emission lies just outside the optical [N II] emission zone. Subject headings: infrared: interstellar medium: lines and bands – interstellar medium: molecules – planetary nebulae: general

A&a Manuscript No. Narrow-band Imaging and a Search for Planetary Nebulae ?

We summarize the results of narrow-band (H and O III] 5007 A) imaging of eight planetary neb-ulae taken during recent observing campaigns: We present the probably largest known PN, MWP 1, with a linear diameter of about 6 pc. We show rst narrow-band images of He 2-437, MeWe 1-5, MeWe 1-8, MeWe 1-9, NGC 1360, and of { like we term them { the \Galactic footballs" A 43 and NGC 7094. We report abou...

The Formation of Very Narrow Waist Bipolar Planetary Nebulae

We discuss the interaction of the slow wind blown by an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star with a collimated fast wind (CFW) blown by its main sequence or white dwarf companion, at orbital separations in the range of several × AU ∼< a ∼< 200 AU. The CFW results from accretion of the AGB wind into an accretion disk around the companion. The fast wind is collimated by the accretion disk. We argue...

Candidates for Intracluster Planetary Nebulae in the Virgo Cluster based on the Suprime-Cam Narrow-Band Imaging in O[III] and Hα

We have identified 38 candidates of intracluster planetary nebulae (ICPNe) in a 34 × 27 field in the core of the Virgo cluster based on the Suprime-Cam imaging through two narrow-band filters centered at the redshifted wavelengths of the [OIII]λ=5007Å and the Hαλ=6563Å lines. Broad-band images in V and R bands are used to check for any emissions in the adjacent continuum. We describe the method...

II. A penchant for bipolarity and low-ionisation structures

Considerable effort has been applied towards understanding the precise shaping mechanisms responsible for the diverse range of morphologies exhibited by planetary nebulae (PNe). A binary companion is increasingly gaining support as a dominant shaping mechanism, however morphological studies of the few PNe that we know for certain were shaped by binary evolution are scarce or biased. Newly disco...

Optically Thick Radio Cores of Narrow-Waist Bipolar Nebulae

We report our search for optically thick radio cores in sixteen narrow-waist bipolar nebulae. Optically thick cores are a characteristic signature of collimated ionized winds. Eleven northern nebulae were observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 1.3 cm and 0.7 cm, and five southern nebulae were observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 6 cm and 3.6 cm. Two northern object...
